Bolivia situation guide

Pampas or jungle, and one rule above all

From Rurrenabaque, at the edge of Madidi, almost every traveler weighs the same choice: the pampas, where a motorized canoe drifts past caimans, capybaras and pink dolphins watched from the boat, or the selva, a walk deep in one of the most biodiverse jungles on earth, where plants and giant trees outnumber the animals you'll see. Both cost the same, so the decision is about what you want to experience, not price. Running underneath everything is one firm rule you learn to say and to keep: with wild animals you keep your distance, you never touch or feed them, you don't chase them for a photo, and you follow the guide. Communities are visited only with permission, and you ask before photographing people. Ask the guide, Don Wilson, everything in respectful usted, then take the decision, calmly, on your own terms.

Essential vocabulary

  • la pampa / la selva: the pampas (wetlands) / the jungle The two words that name your whole choice in Rurrenabaque, wetlands by canoe, or the Madidi jungle on foot.

Bolivian Spanish terms

  • ¿A qué distancia se ven los animales?: At what distance are the animals seen? Asking about distance is asking about the wildlife rule itself, watch, don't approach.
