Bolivian Spanish word

el NIT

Meaning: tax ID number

How it is used in Bolivia

Bolivia's business tax ID. Every factura needs one, and asking for it comfortably ('¿a qué NIT la emito?') marks you as someone who's done this before, not a beginner.

With almost every factura comes the question '¿con NIT o sin nombre?'. Residents give their tax number so purchases count for them; a visitor simply answers 'sin nombre', no document needed.

When you ask for a factura, staff may ask for your NIT. It's routine, and if you'd rather not give data, you can have the factura made 'sin nombre'.
