Report it, ask for the copy, stay calm
A stolen phone is stressful, but at the Policía Turística desk your job is simple: say what happened, when, and roughly where; ask how to file the report (la denuncia); mention that you'll block your line and cards; and ask for a copy to keep. That copy is the payoff, your travel insurance and embassy will ask you to show it (chapter 4). Keep to usted, the respectful register you use with any official, and keep it calm. This chapter only reports and asks: it never gives legal, insurance, or security advice, never names the cause or outcome of the crime, and never uses a real address or number, every phone, card, and report number is a placeholder. When you're unsure of a detail, say so honestly rather than invent it; an honest report is a stronger one.
Essential vocabulary
- me robaron el celular: they stole my phone The plain, factual way to open a theft report, say what happened before anything else.
- perdí mi teléfono: I lost my phone The honest alternative when you're not sure it was taken, say the version that's true for you.
- quiero hacer una denuncia: I want to file a report The fixed phrase that turns your account into an official record, the reason you came to the desk.
- ¿cómo hago la denuncia?: how do I file the report? It's fine not to know the steps, asking is how you let the officer walk you through them.
- fue hace una hora: it was an hour ago The 'when' the report needs, 'hace + time' means 'ago', an honest estimate is enough.
- fue en una calle con mucha gente: it was in a street with a lot of people A general 'where' that needs no real address, you never have to invent a street name.
- necesito bloquear mi línea: I need to block my line The phrase for protecting your number, you say it to your carrier, and act fast once you leave.
- voy a bloquear mis tarjetas: I'm going to block my cards State the protective action (never a card number) and do the real blocking through your bank.
- ¿me da una copia de la denuncia?: could you give me a copy of the report? The request that pays off later, your insurance and embassy will ask you to show this copy.
- muchas gracias por su ayuda: thank you very much for your help A calm, usted close that matches the respectful register you keep with any official.
Bolivian Spanish terms
- la denuncia: the official (police) report In Bolivia the denuncia is the official document recording what happened. It's the piece of paper your travel insurance and your embassy will ask for, so obtaining a copy is the whole practical point of the visit.
- la Policía Turística: the Tourist Police A desk set up specifically to help visitors report incidents. You'll be received in usted and treated procedurally, its job is to take your report and hand you the copy, not to advise you on the crime.
- más o menos: more or less / roughly The everyday way to mark an estimate. Attaching it to a time ('hace una hora, más o menos') signals you're being honest about not knowing exactly, which is exactly what the officer wants.

- Quiero hacer una denuncia. ¿Cómo hago la denuncia?: I want to file a report. How do I file it? State your purpose, then ask for the steps, it's fine not to know the process.
- Necesito bloquear mi línea y voy a bloquear mis tarjetas.: I need to block my line and I'm going to block my cards. Name the protective actions as language, you do the real blocking through your carrier and bank, never reading out a number.
- ¿Sería posible que me den una copia de la denuncia?: Would it be possible to get a copy of the report? A softened request for the copy you keep, the document your insurance and embassy will ask for.
