Your first group chat
Paula adds you to 'Los del barrio', a WhatsApp group that has known each other since school, right before Saturday's churrasco. Nobody here uses usted; this is pure vos, fast and warm. You don't have to understand every joke right away (the group will explain 'la vaca' in due time), just greet everyone, say who you are, confirm you're coming, and ask what to bring.
Essential vocabulary
- ¡Hola a todos!: Hi everyone! A group greets differently from a person, this is how you say hello to the whole chat at once.
- Soy la pareja de Paula.: I'm Paula's partner. 'Pareja' never changes form, so this is the one self-introduction line that works no matter who you are.
- ¿Cómo andás?: How's it going? The vos version of 'how are you', completely different from the usted question you'd use with don René.
- Ahí estaré.: I'll be there. The short, confident way to confirm you're coming to Saturday's plan.
- ¿Qué llevo?: What should I bring? The reflex question before any Bolivian gathering, never arrive without asking first.
- Dale.: Sure / okay / sounds good The one-word yes that works for almost anything a friend proposes.
- ¡De una!: For sure! / Absolutely! A more enthusiastic yes than 'dale', reach for it when you're genuinely excited, not just agreeing.
- jaja: haha The default way to show you're laughing or lightening the tone in a Spanish-language chat.
Bolivian Spanish terms
- de una: for sure / absolutely Everyday Bolivian enthusiasm, one notch warmer than 'dale', and instantly recognizable as local.
- el refuerzo: the reinforcement (football metaphor for a new addition) Calling a newcomer 'el refuerzo' borrows football language for team spirit, it's a nickname, not a judgment on your football skills.
- nomás: just / no big deal Tacked onto a request, 'nomás' makes it sound small and easy, 'traé algo nomás' feels much lighter than 'traé algo'.

- ¡Hola a todos! Soy la pareja de Paula.: Hi everyone! I'm Paula's partner. Greeting a group and introducing yourself in the same message.
- Sí, ahí estaré el sábado.: Yes, I'll be there Saturday. Confirming attendance to a plan the group already made.
- ¿Qué llevo para el sábado?: What should I bring for Saturday? The reflex logistics question before any Bolivian gathering.
- Dale, llevo algo.: Sure, I'll bring something. Agreeing easily to an open-ended request, without needing every detail up front.
- ¡De una!: For sure! / Absolutely! Reacting to a fun suggestion with real enthusiasm, not just polite agreement.
