Day to day

What changes in La Paz

Getting around

  • Minibuses (the pasaje is paid on board, to the driver or the voceador) and Mi Teleférico, whose lines are named by colour. Directions follow the slope: ask whether it is uphill or downhill.

Sources: the chapter “Up and down La Paz”

Housing

  • Anticrético is a very well-known arrangement. Piped gas and a gas calefón (water heater); few flats have heating. 'Semiamoblado' often means just the basics: ask for the list.

Sources: the chapter “A La Paz listing, read closely”

Climate

  • 'Four seasons in one day': a cold start, strong sun at noon, a cold evening. Cold nights in June and July; afternoon storms in the rainy season.
  • Cool days all year (17 to 20 °C) and cold nights. Rain from December to March; dry, sunny season from May to August, with nights around 3 °C in June and July.

The rhythm

  • Downtown offices are packed in the morning, with queues at the copy shops too; a short question about one word gets a clearer answer. In Prado banks the wait grows towards noon.

Field notes

Three notes from La Paz

Field note

In La Paz, places are often located by a plaza or a landmark, like “two blocks from Plaza Abaroa”. It is a good clue, but ask for the pin on WhatsApp: in a city of slopes, two blocks can mean a steep climb.

From: A La Paz listing, read closely (La Paz version)
Field note

A croquis is a very common request in La Paz, where a street number alone can be hard to find on a steep hillside. Many people keep one ready, drawn from the nearest avenue or teleférico station to the door.

Field note

In La Paz the sun is strong by day, but June and July nights are cold and few flats have heating. A sunny flat helps, and seeing it at night tells you more than seeing it at midday.
